What is EGCG in Green Tea?
All plants contain compounds known as Phytochemicals which, when consumed, help protect us from disease. These Phytochemicals are divided into subcategories such as Polyphenols and Carotenoids. The most prolific of these Phytochemicals in Green Tea is known as epigallocatechin-3-gallate or EGCG for short. There have been many studies done on EGCG and the benefits have begun to pile up.
Studies on EGCG have had some promising results thus far. Results have shown that EGCG may be cardioprotective, neuroprotective, liver protective, beneficial for blood vessel health and has the ability to reduce obesity and diabetic symptoms. EGCG also appears to have powerful antioxidant effects against free radicals. Free radicals damage healthy cells and can cause cancer as a result. EGCG has been shown to reduce tumor growth involving cancers of the stomach, lungs, liver, breast and colon. Other studies have shown EGCG to enhance brain function and reduce the risk of heart disease.
